Closer to Life: Drawings and Works on Paper in the Marieluise Hessel Collection. Ed. Tom Eccles and Amy Zion. Published by CCS Bard 2020. Photos courtesy of Zak Group
Drawings and works on paper form a large and significant portion of the Marieluise Hessel Collection at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. This publication illustrates the works and also considers their significance as well as the broader significance of contemporary drawing through new writing by Lynne Cooke, Gabriela Jaragui, Michael Newman, Paul Chan, and Marieluise Hessel. Closer to Life also includes reproduces Joan Didion’s 1966 essay, “On Keeping a Notebook.”
I co-edited this book with Tom Eccles in consultation with Marcia Acita to coincide with the eponymous exhibition(delayed due to the pandemic). A special edition of the book includes a new print by Rosemarie Trockel, Childless Figure (2020), housed in a custom slipcase. Design by Zak Group.
