This site features a selection of my professional work from 2011-21. In addition to these projects, from 2016–21, I was faculty at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York where I taught courses in curatorial practice and writing, and oversaw the written component of the masters thesis. From 2007–15, I was an associate editor of Fillip, a quarterly publication for long format art criticism that was published in Vancouver, Canada.&nbsp;Since 2022, I work at Luma Arles on a new initiative that will be announced soon. Volume I includes a forword by Richard Armstrong, a conversation with Hessel, a new essay by Liam Gillick. Volume II includes selections from the school’s Archives and Special Collections, with an introduction by Ann E. Butler. Both volumes include select object texts written by CCS alumni. The book was published to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the graduate program. I co-edited these volumes with Tom Eccles in consultation with Marcia Acita and Ann E. For the exhibition, Halilaj created a new installation based on drawings he made at age 13, while living in Kükes II, a refugee camp in Albania during the war in Kosovo. Reproductions of the original drawings were included in the exhibition The Conference of the Animals at Queens Museum in New York, an exhibition I curated in collaboration with artist Ulrike Müller. Closer to Life: Drawings and Works on Paper in the Marieluise Hessel Collection was an exhibition I co-curated with Tom Eccles in the&nbsp;CCS Bard Galleries,&nbsp;June 26–October 17, 2021. Closer to Life is an exhibition of contemporary drawing and works on paper from the collection of Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College Co-Founder Marieluise Hessel, who dedicated her entire growing collection to the college for study. Tracing the ways in which drawing is used by contemporary artists for its immediacy and its ability to communicate a range of pressing subject matter, the exhibition tracks four decades of collecting across three countries. The works on view echo the sense of intimacy inherent in the exhibition title in the issues that they confront, and speak to the continuing vitality of works on paper as an artistic medium connected to the sphere of everyday life. Alongside the broader exploration of contemporary drawing, the exhibition represents the collection’s range and eclecticism through the inclusion of collages, prints, artist books, and special editions drawn from the Center for Curatorial Studies’ extensive archives as well as a select number of paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Together, these works trace the evolution of the collection through Hessel’s personal journey as a collector. As such, the galleries are organized around four spheres of influence that reflect the geographic trajectory of Hessel’s life, from post-war Germany to her residence in Mexico City and on to New York City during the ’80s and ’90s. The exhibition puts specific emphasis on Hessel’s most recent acquisitions and how they fit into the continuum of her decades-long commitment to collecting. All Photos: Hai Zhang.&nbsp; The Conference of the Animals was a two-part project that consisted of a mural by artist Ulrike Müller (which remains on view until January 2022) and an exhibition of children’s drawings by independent curator Amy Zion (which closed in February 2021). The project included a discussion between Müller, myself, and Lynne Cooke, moderated by Larissa Harris. My deep thanks to Ulrike Müller and to Sally Tallant, Larissa Harris, Sophia Marisa Lucas, Jil Weinstock, Photios Giovanis,&nbsp;Lynne Cooke, Alhena Katsoff, Petrit Halilaj, Ian Sullivan, Susan Cary, Eng Sengsavang, Nancy Gillette, Naomi Fry and Ohad Meromi, Tavi Meraud, David Ment, and all who contributed to the exhibition. This project took its title from German writer Erich Kästner’s children’s book The Animal’s Conference (1949) written in the aftermath of World War II. The story is a political satire about a group of animals who, frustrated by the inefficacy of human international conferences, convene to save the planet.&nbsp; Art by children has played a significant role in modern and contemporary art history. It was used by artists between and after the world wars as inspiration to help make sense of a world gone awry. Like other sources of innovation for modern artists, art by children was rarely attributed properly or dated. Until recently, children were perceived to bring an innocent and even primitive and unbiased perspective to the way that they bear witness to the world. To that end, children’s drawing in particular has also played a role in international diplomacy throughout the twentieth century as well as today to lobby for aid. This exhibition is organized in two sections, in reference to the museum’s history as former&nbsp;host to the General Assembly of the United Nations (1946–50) as well as its Panorama of the City of New York. The introductory section focuses on the role of children’s drawings in international diplomacy. The rest of the gallery is filled with drawings by children made in New York City, depicting life and recording details from the artists’ respective childhoods. Selected for their period-specific details and treatment of scale and perspective, the drawings in this section were made by children from 1900 to today. They range from the childhood output of established artists to named and anonymous works of non-professional artists of various training and ability. As works in this exhibition demonstrate, from an early age, children develop detailed&nbsp;impressions of their environments, which may be recorded directly from life, or mixed with&nbsp;images and stories they experienced secondhand. The Conference of the Animals (An&nbsp;Exhibition of Children’s Drawings) positions children as artists and takes seriously their observations, imagination, and output. The drawings in the exhibition made by children under dire circumstances offer insight into a larger context in which children produce images of conflict as a form of both art therapy and appeals for diplomacy. They also draw attention to how adult authority shapes their perspectives and understanding of situations, and how children’s awareness of their own role as witnesses influences how and what they depict. A significant portion of the works are on loan from the Children’s Museum of Art. This publication illustrates the works and also considers their significance as well as the broader significance of contemporary drawing through new writing by Lynne Cooke, Gabriela Jaragui, Michael Newman, Paul Chan, and Marieluise Hessel. Closer to Life also includes reproduces Joan Didion’s 1966 essay, “On Keeping a Notebook.” I co-edited this book with Tom Eccles in consultation with Marcia Acita to coincide with the eponymous exhibition (delayed due to the pandemic). A special edition of the book includes a new print by Rosemarie Trockel, Childless Figure (2020), housed in a custom slipcase.
